Research · Law firm call benchmark, Q3 2026

When do people call a law firm? 5,099 calls, hour by hour.

The short answer

Across 5,099 inbound calls to law firms from June 15, 2026 to September 20, 2026, 88.6% arrived between 8 AM and 5 PM local time. About 1 in 8 (12.6%) came in while the firm was closed, 4.3% came on a weekend, and the busiest hour was 1 PM.

When calls come in, by hour

There is no single rush hour. Calls climb fast from 8 AM, hold nearly flat from 10 AM to 4 PM, and drop after 5 PM, with a steady trickle into the evening.

Four things the data shows

12.6%

About 1 in 8 calls come in while the office is closed

Closed means each firm's own business hours, so evenings, weekends and holidays the firm marks as closed all count.

16.6%

About 1 in 6 calls arrive before 9 AM or after 5 PM

The 8 AM hour carries 5.2% of calls, and the hour after 5 PM still carries 4.0%. A 9-to-5 phone schedule misses both edges of the day.

10.1%

Lunch is not quiet

The noon hour gets 10.1% of calls, about the same as mid-morning, and 1 PM is the single busiest hour at 11.5%. If everyone steps out at noon, the phones do not.

4.3%

Weekends are light, not empty

An average weekend day brings in about one-ninth the calls of an average weekday. Small, but not zero.

What this means for a firm's phones

  1. Cover lunch. The noon and 1 PM hours together carry more than a fifth of the day's calls. Stagger breaks or route those hours to someone who can take a new client.
  2. Plan for the edges of the day. The 8 AM hour and the hour after 5 PM together carry about 9% of calls. Make sure someone covers both.
  3. Decide what happens when you are closed. One call in eight will find the office closed. Whether that call reaches voicemail, an answering service or an AI receptionist, someone should see it first thing the next morning.

How we measured it

  • Sample. 5,099 inbound calls to law firms using phone systems SaveYa Tech builds and runs, June 15, 2026 to September 20, 2026. Each firm's data starts after its main number moved onto our system, so no partial periods are included.
  • Counting. Each inbound call counts once, at the hour it arrived in the firm's own time zone. Outbound calls are not included.
  • Closed hours. A call is after hours when the firm's business hours, as currently set in its phone system, said the office was closed at that minute. Weekends and holidays count only when the firm marked them closed.
  • Pooled, not averaged. Calls are added together across firms, so higher-volume practices weigh more.
  • Not a national survey. This reflects law firms on our phone platform, not a survey of all law firms. Treat it as a directional benchmark.
  • Anonymous. We used counts only. No firm names, phone numbers, callers or call content are part of this data.
  • What is left out, on purpose. Answer rates, voicemail and why people called. Firms route calls differently, so those numbers would not compare like with like.

Common questions

What time do most people call a law firm?

In our data, 88.6% of calls arrived between 8 AM and 5 PM local time. From 10 AM to 4 PM, every hour carried about 10% to 11.5% of the day's calls, with 1 PM the busiest.

How many law firm calls come in after hours?

12.6% of calls, about 1 in 8, came in while the firm's own business hours said it was closed. That includes weekends and holidays the firm had marked closed.

Do people call law firms on weekends?

Yes, but not many. 4.3% of calls came on a Saturday or Sunday. An average weekend day brought about one-ninth the calls of an average weekday.

Why don't you publish an answer rate?

Firms route unanswered calls in different ways, so an answer rate would compare different things. We left it out rather than publish a number that looks precise and is not.

Can I use these numbers?

Yes. Please cite SaveYa Tech and link to this page. We update it each quarter as the sample grows.
